Vibration Cut-Out Switches (VCOS) are designed to interrupt power to the fan motor and/or provide an alarm in the event of excessive vibration. Switches are available in either electronic or mechanical configuration to meet needs and both types of switches provide reliable performance to limit damage to the unit in the event of a fan or bearing failure. Mechanical switches have either a local or remote reset function, and the electronic switches offer options including alarm with remote or local reset and start-up delay that are compatible with your building management system.
When using a variable frequency drive (VFD), always run the tower through the entire operating speed range to determine any speeds where vibration may be a concern and lock these speeds out of the operation. There will often be some vibration on start-up as the fan ramps up to operating speeds and it is OK to adjust the trip delay to avoid nuisance shutdowns during this period.
