Hollow shafts are used with larger (22″ and 30″ diameter) centrifugal fans. They offer strength and rigidity not found in longer solid shafts. The tube material is selected for use in this application and is held to 0.025″ straightness over the length of the shaft. The journals are ground, polished, and heat shrunk into the hollow shaft to facilitate installation. A fillet weld is then added between the journal and the tube to ensure the torque-handling properties and long life. The shaft is then epoxy-coated for added corrosion resistance.
When installing fan wheels on hollow shafts, remember to apply the adhesive, included in the fan kit, under the fan tabs to prevent the fan wheel from slipping on the shaft.
