The special locking collar, with integral rain shield, keeps rain water off the bearing face. The pillow-block is also machined with a flat face and drain channel to keep any condensation from pooling on the bearing face. In addition, the bearing is packed with a water resistant grease and has an additional lip seal to prevent moisture from entering the bearing.
If replacing only the top fan shaft bearing on vertical shafts, the locking collar on the bottom fan shaft bearing must be loosened and then retightened after the installation of the new top bearing. This is critical because, by design, the top bearing is intended to handle the thrust load.
